Steps

The removal of contaminants from raw water produces drinking water pure enough for human consumption.

Water filtration involves a number of processes that assist in removing organic matter, sediment and minerals such as iron and manganese from our drinking water. The water picks up these as it runs over vegetation, rocks and soil to the creeks and rivers that feed into the dams.

Steps in drinking water purification may include the use of:

  1. screens to remove debris and other large particles
  2. coagulants and filters remove small suspended particles
  3. disinfectants to destroy pathogens.

Different treatments are required depending on the quality of the raw water. Unprotected catchments require more extensive treatment to maintain water quality.
