Land use

Land use can affect the quality of water bodies. This is important if the land use introduces sources of pollution such as animal faeces and fertilisers.

Sixty per cent of the total Sydney’s drinking water catchment is privately owned.

Land use in the catchment includes:

  • native vegetation 63%
  • intensive and extensive agriculture 31%
  • forestry 11%
  • infrastructure such as roads 7%
  • urban areas of less than 1%.
